Urban Development in Africa

Key sectors relevant for African urban development are waste, water, mobility, energy, climate resilience, including background on the political, planning, and financial processes behind realizing infrastructures and transition.

New Expansion and Investments
The African Development Bank recently launched an ambitious programme on urban development, supported by the Urban and Municipal Development Fund, to engage more closely with selected cities across the continent to accompany them from analysis to action planning, project preparation and investment, to demonstrate the technical and economic capacity needed to transform cities sustainably and improve resilience. Capacity development, knowledge exchange and learning about innovative solutions for sustainable urban development are part of the programme's framework.
African cities are challenged by lack of financial resources, infrastructure, sustainable integrated energy systems, clean water, and mobility issues, but they are growing rapidly. This is an opportune time to get local governments and city leaders to take the initiative in a holistic approach when developing urban areas and making the necessary investments that attract investors to help create more competitive, innovative, and efficient markets. As an example, Copenhagen (Denmark) was also once a challenge of low fiscal resources, triggering an urban transformation based on cheap human-centred solutions for mobility.
The aim of the mayors’ visit to Copenhagen and Malmoe is to provide African city leaders with insight into people-centred urban development solutions and municipal experiences. Create a showroom for innovative solutions to specific demands expressed by city leaders and identified in the program cities. Through visits to projects around the city, meetings and learning sessions with City of Copenhagen staff, business leaders, service providers and other professionals, city leaders will gain an understanding of the high-level policies and implementation practices on the ground that make urban transformation a reality.
