CCUS & H2 Delegation to North Rhine-Westphalia

Join a delegation to NRW, Germany’s industrial heartland and most populous state. To maintain its industrial core and go green, NRW focuses on CCUS and green hydrogen —areas where Denmark excels and Germany seeks external partners.

CCUS (Carbon, Capture, Utilisation, and Storage) and green hydrogen are gaining increasing attention in Germany. With its substantial share of large CO2-emitting sources, ambitious emission reduction goals, and need for green hydrogen, Germany holds significant potential as an importer of Danish green hydrogen, as well as for the adoption of CO₂ capture technologies and transport infrastructure to export CO2 to Danish storage facilities. Moreover, Germany’s new investment fund for infrastructure projects makes this an ideal time to travel to Germany.

This delegation will take place in North-Rhine Westphalia (NRW), which is responsible for much of Germany’s value creation and a substantial share of its CO2 emissions. To maintain its position as an industrial hub, while becoming green NRW is focusing on two technological solutions: CCUS and green hydrogen.

For both technologies, Germany relies on collaboration with external partners. Due to ongoing domestic debates around CO2 storage, Germany aims to export captured CO2 rather than storing it locally. Regarding hydrogen, Germany has assessed the need to import up to 70 pct. of its total hydrogen demand by 2030 and has recently adopted the RED III transport directive. Overall, this aligns well with Danish plans to import CO2 and export green hydrogen and will create market opportunities for Danish companies in Germany.

Furthermore, the ramp-up phase of both technologies will prioritize industrial centres such as NRW, making it an ideal destination for further strengthening Danish-German cooperation.
