Mapping of TDU-facilities in Denmark
The Danish Business Authoritys mapping of TDU-facilities
A new mapping from the Danish Business Authority provides the most comprehensive overview to date of Denmark’s test, demonstration and development (TDU) facilities for biosolutions. The report identifies 14 facilities across fermentation, precision fermentation, bioraffining, CO₂-to-protein and microalgae, highlighting both national strengths and critical scale-up gaps.
Denmark holds a leading position in (precision) fermentation, with 10 facilities primarily located in Greater Copenhagen/Zealand. Capacity currently reaches up to 5,000 litres, with public funding allocated to expand capacity to 25,000 litres. However, the report shows that most infrastructure is concentrated at early-stage development (TRL 2–5), while access to pilot and industrial-scale facilities (TRL 6–9) remains limited. As a result, many Danish startups and SMEs rely on foreign contract manufacturers for large-scale production.
Within green bioraffining and emerging areas such as CO₂-to-protein, facilities are fewer and typically operate below TRL 6. Stakeholders point to the need for more integrated, multipurpose facilities capable of supporting diverse technologies and enabling value-chain synergies.
The study builds on desk research, surveys and interviews with leading actors, including DI Biosolutions, alongside Aarhus Universitet, Danmarks Tekniske Universitet, Teknologisk Institut and the Novo Nordisk Fonden.
According to DI Biosolutions, Denmark lacks large-scale fermentation capacity and risks losing production abroad. The organisation calls for public co-financing of up to DKK 300 million annually from 2026 to establish facilities with tanks of up to 100,000 litres.
Despite significant public and private investments in recent years, the mapping concludes that further expansion and stronger national coordination are needed to secure Denmark’s global leadership in biosolutions and enable companies to scale and manufacture domestically.
