Joint call to action: A future with natures solutions
Together with the Danish government and several key actors, we make a joint call to action for a resilient future in Europe.
It is a main priority for the Danish Presidency of the Council to bolster the EU’s long-term competitiveness, including through development and deployment of new technologies that will be key to accelerate action for a more competitive, resilient, and sustainable Europe.
Biosolutions offer novel opportunities to produce food more effectively, empowering European farmers, and delivering innovative ingredients and materials ranging from feed to asphalt and cosmetics – sourced and produced solely in Europe. Biosolutions already constitute a vital growth sector within the EU, engendering significant untapped potential and driving European prosperity.
Europe is on the verge of a job and growth boom if biosolutions are prioritised and supported by the right policy framework. But the global race for biosolutions is heating up rapidly, and Europe finds itself at a critical juncture. Accelerated action is therefore needed across three targeted areas.
The regulatory landscape must be open to new solutions that mitigate current societal challenges. Biosolutions are often challenged by existing regulation based on conventional technologies and chemical processes. A modern regulatory framework is needed – one that supports innovation, maintains high safety standards, and is equipped for the biosolutions of tomorrow.
Access to risk capital is crucial. If solutions like biobased plant protection, which can safeguard European farmers and their yields, are to break through, investments in R&D and scaling must be significantly strengthened. Both national schemes and European funding instruments play a key role, and funding should be directed toward technologies that can truly boost European competitiveness and create quality jobs.
The physical and digital infrastructure must be strengthened. It forms the backbone of a well-functioning sector and requires more test-facilities and large-scale production sites where technologies can be matured and demonstrated in practice. A clear prioritisation of biosolutions in the EU’s industrial policy is the way forward.
Ambitious action across these three areas can drive progress towards a future of growth, resilience, and opportunity for the EU. A future powered by solutions from nature.
