Recommendations for a national strategy on biosolutions

To ensure that Denmark stays ahead in the global race for innovation in biosolutions, it is necessary for the Danish government to employ a national strategy on biosolutions. The focus of such a strategy should be on concrete initiatives, ensuring the right environment for future growth and resilience.

As the hub for the invention of biosolutions and a global innovation leader, Denmark has immense potential to succeed in growing the sector nationally by creating the right framework for the scaling, developing and bringing biosolutions to market, benefitting both consumers, farmers, employers and companies as well as the economy and environment. 

Denmark already has world leading research and patenting activities, world-leading biosolution companies, a growing number of startups and accelerators, public and private investors and the qualified workforce needed. Now we need ambitious policy to realize the potential of the sector before production risks moving to the United States, China or other countries, where approval times are quicker and starting is cheaper. 

As an inspiration for such progressive policy, we have made eight concrete recommendations, serving as policy on the different areas, where there is potential for improving the legal framework and societal environment surrounding the sector.

The eight areas of focus are on strengthening Denmark’s world leading research, making approval processes faster and more transparent, improving access to risk-willing and long-term capital, building world-class test and demonstration facilities, securing access to green energy and biomass, further developing the Danish workforce, creating demand for biosolutions and strengthening the entire cluster around the food-sector, incl. biosolutions.
