Where is CCUS heading in 2026, and could the UK market pave the way for Danish technology exporters?

Background
Despite the fact that the current, global CCUS capacity remains modest relative to the scale of global emissions, it’s nevertheless showing progress. Many see 2026 as a crucial year for the technology, as it needs to step up from pilot and demonstration projects to commercial deployment within areas like cement, steel and heavy industry.

Denmark’s ambitious goal of future climate neutrality largely hinges on the implementation of CCUS. An important step forward in Denmark’s carbon capture ambitions was taken in early May 2026 when the Danish government awarded a multibillion-dollar CCUS contract to cement producer Aalborg Portland to capture, transport, and store 1.25 million tons of CO2 each year from 2030.

But what are the broader perspectives for CCUS, and can it turn into a profitable export case for Denmark in the long run, for instance in the UK, which is becoming Europe’s largest CCUS deployment market?
