Korea and Japan – Energy Governance Partnership
08.30-09.15
Business opportunities in wind energy
Background
Denmark has long-standing and very active collaboration and exchange on wind energy at the government level with Japan and Korea under the Energy Governance Program which is anchored with the Danish Energy Agency and represented at the embassies in Tokyo and Seoul respectively as well. A broad range of regulatory exchanges and commercial promotional activities take place each year. At this workshop, you will get an overview and discuss the current state of affairs in wind energy in the two markets - with a particular view on business opportunities with power companies in the renewable energy sector.
Japan
The landscape of companies bidding for the national auctions will be examined. The field spans companies from large industrials over trading houses, traditional utilities and projects developers. The first centrally-auctioned offshore projects from 2021 are yet to be built indicating that Japan is also affected by the current troubles of the global offshore wind industry. Thus, there is little room for mistakes for the developers – and this is where the opportunities are for Danish competences.
Korea
After recent political changes, the offshore wind development is moving forward with a more pro renewable energy president leading an accelerated path towards a real energy transition in Korea. With the newly passed Offshore Wind Special Act and its drafted Enforcement Decree, it is now anticipated that some of the obstacles for wind developers will be eased, for example the complex permitting process. With grid expansion being addressed in new legislation, new auction roadmap and Korea’s solid basis for an off shore wind supply chain, the future for Korea’s ambitious targets for off shore wind build out seems bright. Although many challenges still exists, the market for developers seems promising.
