9 Danish companies exploiting German hydrogen opportunities
Together with the Embassy in Berlin, and Hydrogen Denmark, we have organized a delegation to Oldenburg, 5-7 September, where Ørsted, Rambøll, Gas Storage Denmark, Topsoe, Everfuel, DNV, CIP, Energinet and Grundfos will be meeting with German offtakers and leading companies in the hydrogen industry. The Beyond Gas conference is designed to cultivate cross-border cooperation, and where last year it was focused on Germany - the Netherlands, this year we are focusing on Danish-German cooperation.
Germany is betting big on hydrogen as a “wundermittel” for the green transition of its heavy industry. This is evidenced by the ambition of national production of hydrogen in the order of 10 GW by 2030, but also by the large-scale hydrogen import strategy that the federal government has announced (but not yet financed). The fact is that the industry’s expected import needs far exceed the possibilities for self-sufficiency, and that any imports from third countries at competitive prices have long prospects. Denmark offers itself in this context as an obvious partner, which is emphasized by our surplus potential for renewable energy and the recently adopted agreement on cross-border hydrogen infrastructure between Ministers Aagaard and Habeck.
The German hydrogen strategy is under rapid development, and will be an important benchmark for the Danish export case of hydrogen and PtX products. With the signed MoU on cross-border hydrogen infrastructure from 2028, and well-described export potentials of up to 100 billion DKK towards 2050, there are great business opportunities to explore. In DI, we are putting a big focus on Germany in the coming time, and the visit here is also an opportunity to participate in the work towards a future offtake declaration on hydrogen, between our two countries.
