Global guide to sustainable business

The UN’s sustainable development goals create export opportunities for Danish companies. But which SDGs create business opportunities where? The Confederation of Danish Industry gives you an overview of the demand in some of the most interesting markets.

USA

At a federal level, the US is not particularly interested in supporting a sustainable development agenda. However, there is a growing market for sustainable energy and green solutions in progressive states such as Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey and California. New York City is particularly interesting, because it was the first to report to the UN on its SDG progress.

GHANA AND NIGERIA

Job creation and maintaining strong economic growth are the main elements of Ghana’s development strategy. With flagship policies such as ”One District, One Factory” and ”Ghana Beyond Aid”, the country has set course for a strong industrial economy.

The same development is seen in Africa’s most populous country, Nigeria, which has a large – albeit slow-growing – industrial sector.

BRAZIL

South America is a multi-faceted place. Chile and Peru are gradually approaching European business standards while countries such as Venezuela and Bolivia lag behind. For Brazil – South America’s largest economy – the main priority is development of its industrial sector. The country is therefore seeking automation technology and other technologies capable of boosting industry and thereby creating more jobs and reducing dependence on imports of consumer goods.

ETHIOPIA AND KENYA

Food production is a major part of both the culture and economy in African countries. This means there is a demand for technology that improves productivity and shelf life. Kenya has a good climate for B2B relationships in the food industry, among others. Energy is an important subject in many African countries with growing populations and increasing prosperity.

Ethiopia is focusing heavily on greater industrialisation and green energy transition.

INDIA

With a projected urban population growth of 400 million by 2050, India is facing the challenge of designing liveable cities. Major investments are already underway to ensure the life quality of India’s urban dwellers. The aim is to improve urban environments and prevent slum growth by investing in smart cities.

CHINA

The world’s most populous country is grappling with certain problems in its rapidly growing cities: Overpopulation and pollution make it difficult to live there. China is therefore seeking smart solutions for clean air and drinking water, especially in larger cities.

SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa is seeking water technologies to ensure clean drinking water for citizens. The water crisis in Cape Town that escalated earlier this year means that new technologies in the field have become a high priority, creating a demand for water monitoring instruments and new techniques for employing alternatives to surface water for drinking water.

INDONESIA

Indonesia’s many islands create a very unique situation. The country is seeking sources of renewable energy that can be produced for small island communities as well as sustainable solutions for marine pollution issues – and the finances are there.
