Boosting sustainable development with nature

Beskrivelse

We have less than six years to reach the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, but we are only 16% on track to achieve them. All the while the temperature is rising, ecosystems are challenged, extreme weather events are intensifying, and species are dying out. Global food systems are under unprecedented pressure due to war, inflation, and the Covid19 pan- demic. In short, we are amid an abundance of crises making it even more difficult to drive sustainable transformation.

In order to accelerate sustainable development towards 2030 and beyond, we need to lever- age and deploy all possible solutions. The biosolutions industry holds an immense potential in contributing to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Biosolutions encompass solutions that leverage nature’s own microbiological processes – such as enzymes, bacteria, yeast cells, and natural plant protection – through fermentation and biorefining. This allows us to upgrade what was previously considered side streams and simple biomass into new food products, feed, building materials, bioplastics, and much more, while enhancing sustainability in other industries.

This catalogue features nine different biosolutions from all over Europe that can each contribute to achieving several different SDGs. From battling malnutrition and reducing chemicals used in agriculture to ensuring clean water and sustainable production processes, the featured solutions can drive the transformation towards a more sustainable future – in many cases while enhancing livelihoods and economic growth in the world’s least developed countries.

Now is the time to boost sustainable development with nature by leveraging biosolutions and their role in driving not just the green transition but the transition into a sustainable, equitable and circular society.
