Meet a member: MC Uldall

How can traditional, civilian industry support the defense sector and diversify their customer base? MC Uldall recently asked themselves this question and has now decided to join DI Defense and Security in order to find out.

MC Uldall Maskinfabrik was established as a Danish company in 1993 and has since specialized in the high-precision processing of metals. Traditionally, they have been supplying different actors in the food industry with high-end processed machinery. This is a highly regulated sector that demands high quality of machinery and parts used in production.

MC Uldall Maskinfabrik works with metal, and with their highly specialized equipment’s and machines, they can machine the metals into the exact and precise shapes that are necessary for it to function as a component in different kinds of machinery. “Some of the raw metal we buy costs around 12.000$ a piece, so we always say that we have to get it right the first time when we machine it”, says Kent Petersen.

From food industry to defense industry

Recently, MC Uldall Maskinfabrik began thinking that their year-long specialization in high-end processing of components might also play a valuable part of the defense industry, and so decided to explore how they could integrate their know-how and specialization into the industry’s supply-chain. “Defense traditionally uses a lot of metal, and all the components has to be made with great precision in order to ensure reliability in the battlefield”. Kent Petersen stresses that their company doesn’t work with metals for armor purposes, but the components they are able to make would fit into all kinds of machinery, from motors to rocket systems. “Right now, there is a lot of focus on new artillery systems for the Danish army, and if Denmark went ahead with their deal with Israel to get their rocket systems, then we would be able to help produce key components that could fit into that system”.

Even though MC Uldall Maskinfabrik has never previously engaged itself in the defense industry as a company, they are certain that their skills and products would be a great fit for the industry. “What we lack is a good network and contacts within the defense industry. That’s why becoming a member of DI Defense and Security is the first important step towards our goal of integrating ourselves into the supply-chain of the defense industry. We think they will help us a lot in broadening our network and contacts in the sector.”
