District heating

-

With EU’s increasing climate targets, the political pressures and business attention to district heating as an efficient and green solution is growing across many countries. As a leading nation in district energy, Denmark is well-positioned to supply to this growing market. And with collaboration programmes in a range of European countries centered specifically around district energy, the knowledge and goodwill towards Danish solutions grows among key partners abroad. At two workshops, we look into current extraordinary opportunities in Netherlands and Germany.

11.15 WORKSHOP #1

DISTRICT HEATING / NETHERLANDS

Background
The Netherlands has only little district heating and is extremely reliant on (own and imported) natural gas. The new Dutch heat law has given the co-operatives and the municipalities a requirement to own at least 51% of the shares in heating companies. Many municipalities search for the best way to engage in the green transition of the heating sector and see district heating as the option for the cities, towns and villages. The Danish Energy Agency, the Embassy and DBDH support these developments and we are confident it will result in both a green heat future for the Netherlands and increased export for Danish companies.

Speakers
The New Dutch Heat Law / Susanna Paadekooper, Advisor, Danish Energy Agency
The Role of Dutch Municipalities in District Heating /  Niels Hanskamp, Advisor, Association of Dutch Municipalities (VNG)
- Opportunities for Danish Exporters / Patrick Van der Stigchel, Vice President Benelux and SW EU, Kingspan-Logstor

13.00 WORKSHOP #2

DISTRICT HEATING / GERMANY

Background
Today, 15% of German households (corresponding to 6 million) are supplied by district heating. The target is to triple that coverage to 18-20 million households by 2045. Further, the aim is that 50% of district heating will be climate neutral by 2030 and 100% by 2045.

The government is implementing still stronger laws and instruments to support the green heating transition in Germany and still more Länder and municipalities take concrete steps for planning, building and expanding heat networks. The Wärmewende is accelerating – with inspiration from Denmark - and it is clear that you get; “Keine Energiewende, ohne Wärmewende!”
